in Cherry Tomato Challenge

So who is ready to grow some incredible cherry tomatoes??

We are giving away FREE Biodynamic Cherry Tomato Seeds!

If you have EVER been curious about gardening or are already a gardener I hope you join us!  The goal here is to get as MANY people as we can to start learning how to garden.  What better way to start than growing your own cherry tomatoes??

These seeds are over 20 years old and are the most genetically strong seed that we have. We took these seeds from our strongest plant in 2007 and made thousands of seeds from it.  We harvested well over 2,000 cherry tomatoes from one plant and the taste of them was out of this world!

These seeds are from a plant that has been grown with Biodynamic principles, in the BEST soil, and with the most love for over 20 years.  We are so excited to share these seeds with you all.

There is a special story behind these tomato seeds that I think you will all LOVE, but I’m going to save that story for another post.  Right now, I want to explain the Biodynamic Cherry Tomato Challenge and get you all your FREE seeds!

When you sign up for the challenge we will send you your seeds in an envelope which will also have an instruction sheet.  We will also send you e-mail updates on how you should be caring for your tomato plant and answering any questions that you may have along the way.  We want to help you grow this beautiful plant from START TO FINISH!

We will be posting updates on our growth and we will also be sharing other peoples progress as well.  This is going to be such a great learning experience for all of us and we really want to establish a sense of community around this plant.  Think about it for a second, a few hundred people growing the SAME type of plant with the SAME seeds, this is going to be SO MUCH FUN.

2010 Biodynamic Cherry Tomato Challenge!

1. Submit your name and e-mail address and a good address to send the seeds to

2.  We will send out the seeds with instructions

3. We will keep you updated by e-mail, video, pictures and blog posts

4.  WE WANT YOU INVOLVED! We would love to get progress pictures from you!

5.  PLEASE PLANT SEEDS IMMEDIATELY! :-)

6.  Seeds must be started immediately, Sunday March 28th is the LAST day to start your tomato seeds for optimal growth!

THANK YOU EVERYONE!

I believe that we can all become the hope of the world.  One garden at a time we are healing the earth.  We also heal ourselves through gardening, its really an amazing relationship.  I’m really excited about this challenge as a whole, but I am even more excited about the beginning gardeners that will be joining us.  For the first time they will understand the connection that a gardener has with their plants.  It may sound silly, but you begin to form such a STRONG bond with your plants.  You wake up and think about them immediately.  Wondering if they are getting enough sun, water, and nutrients.  They really become like a child or a pet, its really cool to form that relationship!

Lets have fun with this everyone!

Thank you all for making it happen -

Curt

F.A.Q.

I live in a city, and I don’t have a yard.  Can I still join the Challenge?

Yes you can join, we encourage INSIDE growers.  The first 3 generations of this seed were grown indoors!  As long as you have a southern facing window, you can keep this plant almost all year around!

I dont live in the United States.  Can I still join the Challenge?

Yes you can still join, but we first have to make sure its legal to send seeds to your country.

I’ve never grown anything in my life and I don’t know how to garden.  Can I still join the challenge?

Yes of course you can join!  If you are curious about gardening and want to get your start somewhere, join the challenge.  A master gardener with over 50 years of gardening experience is going to be giving advice in how to nurture your plant throughout the growing season.  If you have any questions, there is an entire community of people growing the same seeds and they would love to help.

This cherry tomato plant seems to grow so large, will it be too much for me to handle as a first time gardener?

This plant can grow so tall, 15 feet is no small plant!  Yes, you can handle a plant as large as this.  Its really no different than caring for a smaller plant, you just have to tie the vines up from time to time.  We can guide you in the best way to do that.

I’m usually really busy, will this be time consuming?

We hope so! Its always great to spend time with your plants.  However, no, it is not so time consuming that you could not manage to take care of the plant. Its possible to spend less than an hour a week caring for the plant.

What should I be doing right away to get ready for the challenge?

Just start saving table scraps for your compost hill!  You might even want to ask your friends or family to save their table scraps to help you gather a lot of material for your compost pile.  Also save any grass clippings, leaves, and any type of manure.

What is a compost hill or a tomato hill and how do we build one?

We will send you instructions with your seeds as to how you grow the tomato hill.  We will also send you a video showing you how we have built ours.  You will get step by step instructions all along the way.

Do I have to build the tomato hill?

We GREATLY encourage you to build the tomato hill.  This will help grow a superior plant and it will provide the tomato plant with superior nutrition and it will encourage its growth.  Your friends, family, and neighbors will be astounded at the plants growth!

Isnt it expensive to send out so many seeds, how are you funding this?

It is time consuming and the postage and materials do cost money.  All that we ask for is your willingness to learn and participation.  But if you want to send a donation our way, we certainly would not turn down your sign of gratitude :)

_____________________________________________________________

**** Please only join if you are DEDICATED to the challenge and are willing to

grow the plant to completion! It would be a shame to waste these precious

seeds.  :-)   THANK YOU ALL ****

Thanks you soooo much! I plan to grow mine in the upside down grower – think that will work ok? I love that you said the plant can grow indoors ALL YEAR LONG. WOW. Really? In what size pot? Now I am torn … upside down, inside, or in the garden area … hmmmm. So many choices!!! :-)

JoAnn March 21, 2010 at 1:47 pm

I’m building my tomato ladder … collecting recipes in anticipation. Hoping in the end to donate a good quantity to a local food bank… I am excited to take this challenge.

All the best somewhere in Washington State… Thank you for teaching us all,
JoAnn

I am interested in growing some tomato cherry plants, but I don’t see where I put my info in the “sidebar”.

Cathy Seale March 21, 2010 at 1:56 pm

I’m in Louisiana and we are already planting. Would love to be a grower of your tomato seed!

Jenny Bowen March 21, 2010 at 2:46 pm

Hi, I would love to have a chance to try out the cherry tomato plant in our garden this year. After taking a much to long hiatus from gardening, we started back 3 years ago. Things are coming along slowly but surely. We met a gentleman last week that is taking a permaculture course and he asked if he could use our yard as a project, as he isn’t in a spot right now where he can apply this to his own yard, so we are quite excited that he will be coming by this evening!

Natalya March 21, 2010 at 3:33 pm

I’d like yo get the seeds from you to grow this tomato plant. Thanks for offering and for loving the planet Earth.

Curt Nicholas March 21, 2010 at 3:52 pm

Yes Mary, you can grow this plant indoors all year round as long as you have a window that has southern sun exposure. We will be sending out enough seeds for you to grow one inside and out!
As for the size pot, a medium to large size will do. If you are a bit more adventurous, grow it outside and follow along with our method, your friends, family and neighbors will be stunned!!

Curt Nicholas March 21, 2010 at 3:54 pm

JoAnn, thank YOU for joining the challenge and helping to bring gardening back to the people!

John March 22, 2010 at 12:23 pm

Hi Curt!
I’ve been dreaming of starting a garden at home for the past several months. I know tomatoes are going to be involved, and a siberian cedar, and several herbs and fruit trees. Our tomato plants always have trouble, but they’re also always planted in the backyard.
This is a great giveway :) Spread the seeds of love!!

John

Curt Nicholas March 22, 2010 at 1:01 pm

John, its so great to hear that you are starting your garden, this is the year to start!! We are going to be documenting a few gardens in the local area and hopefully inspiring people to start their very own garden and hopefully we can show some useful tips and tricks in the garden! Thanks for your comment John!

Carol March 22, 2010 at 6:00 pm

I’d like information on how to grow a small porch garden. I live in an apartment with NO yard available to me, but I do have a small east-facing porch. Problem is I live in Las Vegas, so about the middle of May thru end of August it gets REALLY hot on the porch (100-119 F plus). Morning sun comes thru the east windows but is gone by noon. Would inside work? Not much room and windows are only east and west. No south or north.

Curt Nicholas March 22, 2010 at 6:16 pm

Carol my dear, maybe you could sneak your plants to your neighbors house after the sun goes away at noon?? :-) Well the porch is just scorching! It really is difficult to get some good growth out of plants unless they have a southern facing window. How about in the fall/winter time? The porch conditions might be better but the sun is still the kicker. What advantage you do have is that you get the first 2 hours of morning sun which is really the most crucial, however 8hrs of sunlight is as well. It wouldnt hurt to try, right?

Lynn March 22, 2010 at 6:38 pm

I’m so disappointed I didn’t get in on this in time. I think what you are doing is a WONDERFUL idea and so very, very generous!!! Good luck to all who get some seeds and I look forward to hearing/seeing how everyone is doing on this site.

Yardsnacker March 22, 2010 at 9:05 pm

Drats, almost got in on the cherry tomato challenge! Well I opted in so here’s hoping for some honey!

Peace,

Sam

Betsy Pool March 26, 2010 at 8:41 am

We are an American family and are living in Damanhur, an eco community in Northern Italy. With two other families we are about to start a co-creative garden with nature on land that was once the yard to the ancient village school. It has been loaned to us for our garden by the mayor and the Commune of Vidracco. I was delighted to find your site and will look forward to following the progress of the Biodynamic Cherry Tomatoe challenge. I am just about to sew our own organic, though not biodynamic seeds, using Maria Thun’s planting calendar. This will be our first garden in Italy!!! Wishing all of you other spiritual gardeners out there, a very fulfilling and connected year in the garden! Con voi (with you)

Curt Nicholas March 26, 2010 at 10:08 am

Betsy! Wow I love it!! What an INCREDIBLE mayor, loaning the land out so generously like that. The place in which you are living sounds incredible. I’ve traveled through Tuscany and the southern region of Italy but never up north. I hear its beautiful. Can I stop by if I’m ever in the area?? ;-)

R. A. Marquardt March 28, 2010 at 10:08 pm

Is it possible to get a couple of seeds yet? I would like to try a plant or two in my organic garden this season. Thanks. Richard

Stephanie K March 30, 2010 at 10:05 am

This is so exciting! Thanks for making this possible. I’ve started a Photo Album of my Challenge on my FaceBook and there’s been a lot of interest in it. I’m curious to see how everyone’s tomato seeds do in the different parts of the country and world.

Curt Nicholas March 30, 2010 at 3:30 pm

Stephanie! NICE, I like it. I’m excited to see all the different levels of progress too. Remember to join up on facebook, we will be posting a lot of pictures on there also!

Lori Painter May 9, 2010 at 3:56 pm

Curt,
